In the summer of 2013 an international team of scientists, artists and educators launched a science and art expedition called Gyre: The Plastic Ocean to study marine debris along the magnificent Southwest Alaskan Coastline. Hughes was invited to make new art work and contribute to the project and his work is featured in the exhibition of the same title which is currently on tour across America.
Plastika Alaska brings together a selected group of photographs made on this coastal exploration, they explore a kind of personal anxiety focused upon object, plasticity, place and presence.
Plastika Alaska is a limited special edition artist zine. It is a sequence of full-color works including short text contributions from Pam Longobardi, Mark Dion, Carl Safina, Nicholas Mallos, Howard Ferren and an essay by Abigail Susik which explores the ocean, waste and history.
